These paintings explore the connections between the mind, body, and spirit during times of suffering as well as the connections we need with others in order to heal. Pain is not visible to the eye. The experience of pain can be one of isolation, despair, horror, anguish, and so many other words that fail to grasp the many dimensions that pain exists in and takes over when it is present. This series is an attempt at describing the indescribable, at capturing in images the emotional and physical experience of becoming disabled, surviving, and learning how to live and build a relationship with it. Likewise, many of these images express the necessity of reaching out to others in order to find healing power and strength during times of great suffering and pain. Ideas for these paintings have come from many sources: my imagination, my body, meditations, dreams, and, most importantly, the words of friends and healers who have helped me along this journey. |
